The World of Strawberry Shortcake

The World of Strawberry Shortcake premiered in 1980. It was shown on Channel 20, WDCA in the Washington, DC market on Thursday October 25, 1984 at 3 pm.

Strawberry Shortcake's friends throw her a surprise birthday party and they give her a magic watering can that floods Strawberryland. The watering can was devised by the Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak as a trick to get all the berries in Strawberryland for his pies.

Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Plum Puddin', Raspberry Tart, Apple Dumplin', The Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak, Mr. Sun, Custard, Pupcake, Escargot, Lucky Bug.

This was the first Strawberry Shortcake cartoon ever made, yet it was the fourth one on our tape.

This special, and the next two were written by Romeo Mueller, who wrote most of the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.

By far, this is my favorite SSC special. I don't really have a reason for that.

Because of the way the SSC cartoons were ordered on the tape, I used to think this one was the last in the SSC series, because the Pieman reforms.

What drives me absolutely crazy about this special is the way people mis-title it. A lot of places call this one "The Wonderful World of Strawberry Shortcake." I don't know why, but that just bugs me. The name is definitely just "The World of Strawberry Shortcake."

BLUEBERRY: Shortcake's birthday? I plum forgot!
HUCKLEBERRY: You sure do forget things lately.
BLUEBERRY: You're right.
HUCKLEBERRY: Well let's get Plum Puddin' and plan a party for her.
BLUEBERRY: For whom?

RASPBERRY: A surprise party for Shortcake? How old is she?
PLUM: Six.
RASPBERRY: I think she's seven if she's a day!
HUCKLEBERRY: Tartie, when are you gonna learn not to say what you think 'til you think about it a little more?

PIEMAN: What's the matter, kiddies? Did your can spring a leak?
KIDS: The Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak!
PIEMAN: Yah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah-tah, yah-tah-tah-tah! Cha!

MR. SUN: When the waters receeded, they landed with a thud. And found their proud homeland homely as . . . .
KIDS: Mud!

STRAWBERRY: There's a good side to everybody.
PIEMAN: Oh? What's good about me?
STRAWBERRY: Well . . . . ummmm . . . .
